Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

Many Christians have often misinterpreted the word humility. They think that humility is when you are just a poor person who is struggling with life and always gets the least, but this is not the true humility that the LORD wants each child of God to have. Humility is being humble before the LORD and being humble before the LORD means to be obedient to His Word. It means being a child in His presence and thus meditating upon His Word day and night and observing to do what the Word says. Think of all the great men and women of God in the Bible; they prospered and were very successful because they were obedient to what God commanded them to do. They were children in His presence and therefore God magnified them. Humility is therefore a state of the heart and mind that is full of God’s Word. Humility draws from the Word of God in the Bible. Since a human person is body, soul and spirit, humility is a product of the human spirit. It is a virtue that draws from the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self- control. Many Christians are so mistaken because they think that humility is when a person is so quiet and even when he talks he talks softly and they even go on to classify a person as humble because of his dress. Let me tell you, this is all outward show. Humility as I have already said is a product of the fruit of the Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit comes about when one is obedient to the Word of God. In the above text when Jesus Christ was saying to His disciples you must be wise as serpents and as humble as a dove, He was not referring to that which could be seen by the physical eye, but He was referring to their spiritual state. When the Bible says that Jesus Christ was humble unto death, it is referring to the state of the Spirit. He was obedient to the Word of God even as He hung at the Cross. He remained steadfast upon the Word of God His Father. This is why the Bible says that because of His humility, God exulted Him and gave Him a name above every name and that every knee should bow at His name; of those in heaven and on earth and beneath the earth. There is no exemption for anyone or anything from coming under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Everything bows its knee to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. He is Lord of all. If you therefore humble yourself before the LORD, thus being obedient to His Word and doing what it says, you will never lack, but the LORD will magnify you. James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.”  You will not be a tail but you will always be the head. Alleluia!

Prayer

Dear LORD Jesus Christ, let me be a child in the Father’s presence just as You did when You were on earth. I believe that if my life is humbled to You it shall seem great to men because Your child never lacks anything. Thank You for making my life significant. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray. Amen.
