YOU CANNOT DO WITHOUT THE WORD OF GOD

Devotion of the Day

Matthew 4:3-4

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

📖 Psalm 119:105-112; Matthew 4:1-11

The above response by the LORD Jesus Christ is the response that no other man on the face of the earth had ever made to the devil. The Son of God had gone for forty days and forty nights without taking anything at all. At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the devil came to tempt Him enticing Him to turn stones into bread in order that He may eat. Jesus Christ, however showed that He was not desperate for food but He actually discerned that this was the devil who wanted to win Him to his side. He immediately told the devil that, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:3-4). The devil had thought that He was going to win Jesus Christ to hs side, but the Son of God was so full of the Word of God. This is a lesson for every child of God to follow. You cannot do without the Word of God at all. Your soul needs to feed upon the Word of God always. Many great men of God in the Bible who did not get tempted by the devil, when they were seeking to hear from God, went on a fast and God revealed Himself to them. Moses fasted forty days and forty nights while he separated himself from the children of Israel and he received the ten commandments. Elijah, the prophet of God when he was seeking to hear from God, went without food for forty days and forty nights. When he came to Horeb, the mountain of God, God spoke to him and gave him a new assignment in Israel. The word of God is more important to you as a child of God than the food you take in. The food feeds your flesh, but the Word of God is food for your soul. The more you feed on the Word of God the more you get closer to God. It is therefore very important for you to obey the LORD Jesus Christ’s commandment that “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:3-4). The Word of God increases you in spiritual stature, it gives you wisdom and knowledge of God and it draws you more and more closer to Him. Alleluia!

Prayer

Thank You Father for reminding me that I cannot live on bread alone. May You increase in me more and more appetite for Your Word in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.
